Microlearning
Team-based Design

Instructional designers are always looking for better ways for learners to learn quickly and with higher levels of retention. Adult learners are often busy and have little extra time to devote to learning.

How can instructional designers overcome the issues of time constraints while balancing the need for effective training? We proposed microlearning strategies as the answer.

Our team designed and developed an e-learning experience for instructional designers all about microlearning including:

  • How to design effective microlearning modules

  • How to integrate microlearning into larger curricula

  • How to assess the impact of microlearning

Project Management

Our team utilized multiple areas of project management to achieve this semester project including a Work Breakdown Structure, Risk Register, and Lessons Learned.

Style Guide

To help create a cohesive product across multiple designers and developers we created a style guide outlining colors, fonts, writing tone, imagery, and even a logo with branding guidelines.

Individual Development

While each group member had their hands in almost every aspect of this project, I was responsible for being the subject matter expert and developer for assessing the impact of microlearning.

My specific Articulate Rise module included the following:

  • The importance of evaluating training impact

  • How to use the Kirkpatrick Model of Training Evaluation

  • Multiple interactive pieces, including a branching scenario for assisting a new instructional designer in evaluating impact

Takeaways

Our group was able to exercise our skills managing and participating in a project as a team. We took our knowledge and expertise about adult learning, design, and the technical skills of developing to make a fully functional product.

My biggest contributions were developing the module focused on assessing impact and taking the leading role on creating our style guide. I was able to showcase my knowledge of training evaluation, use of Articulate products, and my ability to build cohesion amongst a great team of designers.
